Earthquake and Tsunami Pet Disaster Protocols

!±8± Earthquake and Tsunami Pet Disaster Protocols

Earthquake? Tsunami? Do you know what to do?

During a major earthquake, tsunami or other catastrophe, having a pet earthquake disaster plan is absolutely necessary. In a major emergency, most international rescue response teams are going to be focusing on helping people. Nevertheless, there will be pets distressed, stranded, unintentionally abandoned and injured. In an earthquake or tsunami buildings crumple, fires break out, and cars get over turned. Local animal shelters and pet rescue agencies may find that their services are being overwhelmed. Survival for you and your dog will depend on you knowing what to do.

Before An Earthquake or Tsunami Strikes

If you live in an earthquake area, on a fault line or near the coast, then it is importance to have an earthquake or tsunami disaster plan. Before an earthquake strikes, you need to store enough food and water to last for at least 72 - 120 hours. Assemble an emergency kit that includes your pets ID, vet records and any pet medicines that they must take daily. It should also include some pet first aid supplies.

During An Earthquake Disaster

During the earthquake, you and your pet need to take cover, drop down and protect your head, neck and back. We live in our head and our chest. Therefore we need to protect these vital areas.

If you are inside, expect high things to fall and glass to break. Do not light a match until you are sure that there are no gas leaks. If you are outside and driving pull over and comfort your pet. In past earthquakes some pet owners have stated later that their pets showed signs of anticipating the coming disaster. So the earthquake may have your pet very stressed.

After An Earthquake A Tsunami May Result

In coastal cities, it is not uncommon for danger to continue with aftershocks or a coming Tsunami. Do not leave your pet outside and chained. If you are on low ground, head for high ground and stay there. Do not get tempted to return to retrieve belongings. Waves can continue for hours, so exercise patience. Danger can result from both the size of the wave and the fact that waves can reach speeds of 450 miles per hour causing enormous destruction and death.

Earthquake or Tsunami Post Traumatic Stress in Pets

After the earth quake, keep a close watch on your pet for post traumatic stress. Your dog might not process the stress as well as you. A trip to the vet may be necessary for medication and professional attention.

Seventh Grade Service Learning Project

Seventh graders in Erika Smith's '93 geography class took their study of natural disasters one step further by integrating a comprehensive service learning project into their unit. Working individually and in small groups, the students planned and implemented 16 different fundraisers, including dress-down days, bake sales, a Middle School dance, a soccer clinic and off-site collections at religious congregations and area restaurants to raise a total of 00. "The students initially planned to use all proceeds toward assembling a variety of emergency kits for distribution by Church World Service," said Becky Boynton, Service Learning Coordinator, who, with Smith, was instrumental in helping to organize the student-led efforts. Following the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan—and CWS' subsequent call for financial help in the aftermath—the class opted for both: they sent CWS checks totaling 72.45 for emergency relief in Japan, and they used the remaining funds to assemble and ship 100 school-, 32 hygiene-, and six baby care kits. "The students were enthusiastic and had terrific ideas," says Smith, "I'm hoping this lays a foundation for them to engage in similar service learning in the future."

Earthquake Emergency Preparedness - Are You Quaking in Your Boots?

!±8± Earthquake Emergency Preparedness - Are You Quaking in Your Boots?

An earthquake, the result of a sudden release of energy in the Earth's crust, can be due to either a natural phenomenon or human activity. This energy release creates seismic waves reading from 1 - 10 on the Richter scale. Those with a magnitude reading of 3 or lower are almost unnoticeable. Earthquakes that reach a magnitude of 7 generally cause serious damage over large areas. Earthquakes are recognizable by the shaking and movement of the ground which can also trigger landslides, volcanic activity and tsunamis.

Large earthquakes cause many serious problems to the surrounding land and its inhabitants. They can result in disease, the loss of basic necessities (such as food, water, shelter, warmth) an increase in insurance premiums due to destruction of property, roads, bridges, etc., the collapse or destabilization of buildings, and worst of all, the loss of human, animal and plant life.

Athough some areas of the world are more prone to earthquakes than others, earthquakes can occur anywhere and should be a concern to everyone. Earthquake preparedness refers to measures that have been designed to help individuals, businesses, and governments in these areas to prepare for significant earthquakes.

There are a number of precautions that individuals, schools and businesses can take to minimize the risks from an earthquake:

1. Have a 72-hour emergency kit within easy reach (near the front door, in the car trunk, near the office desk)

2. Set up an emergency exit plan and practice it on a regular basis (once a month is recommended). This could include a neighborhood evacuation plan as well.

3. Bookshelves and other furniture that could fall should be securely fixed to strong wood studs in the wall, using heavy screws.

4. Heavy or dangerous objects should be moved to lower areas

5. Use fluorescent bulbs instead of halogen or incandescent ones to minimize the risk of fire

6. Have close access to battery powered flashlights (and batteries) everywhere in the home, school or office

7. Have a crank radio on hand for updates on emergency conditions

8. Know how to shut off the gas (and possibly water) supply and have an appropriate wrench near the valve(s)

9. Have several fire extinguishers available and be sure you know how to use them

10. All adults should be trained in basic medical first aid.

Earthquakes occur nearly constantly around the world in places like Canada, Chile, New Zealand, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Pakistan, Indonesia, Iran, Turkey, the United States and Japan. Many people are caught unprepared and thus suffer the consequences.

There are a few important safety measures that should be taken during an earthquake:

1. If possible, get under a table or desk, hold onto a table/desk leg and close your eyes

2. If there is no cover, sit close to a wall away from windows, furniture or anything else that could fall on you

3. Stay in your spot until the shaking is over (this may include smaller aftershocks)

4. Check yourself and others nearby for injuries, being careful to avoid objects that may have fallen around you

5. Watch out for fires

6. Use the stairs when having to evacuate a building (never use the elevator)

7. If outside, stay away from buildings, trees, power lines, etc., crouch down, cover your head and close your eyes

Individuals, schools and businesses in earthquake areas are encouraged to have an emergency kit available with enough supplies for 72 hours (3 days). This is considered the amount of time it usually takes for emergency services to react fully to an emergency situation. Of course, emergency survival kits are a must to have in any disaster situation.

And always: Be Prepared - Before Disaster Strikes!
